Photograph of Duncan Mansion, with oral description |
|
Subject: Historic buildings, homes and sites; Duncan Mansion Date: 1869 Description: This is a photograph of the Duncan Mansion, also known as the Duncan Manor or Towanda Meadows, built by William R. Duncan one mile southwest of Towanda following the Civil War. Stories abound about the three story 20 room home and whether it had been a stop on the underground railroad. But since it was built after the civil war, it could not have been. It is said that Mr. Duncan, who had made his fortune dealing in livestock, built the home on a rise in a spot where it could be seen from the nearby railway. Today the mansion is visible from Route 55 and has prompted many requests for information about the mysterious building. Included with this photograph is an oral description which lasts approximately 1 minute 53 seconds.
